His start in standup comedy began in the United States Armed Forces during a open-mic competition where most people were singing, rapping or juggling something. East Bay native, Ellery was one of two comedians and easily won the hearts of his fellow millitary kin and gave him the juice he needed to persue comedy as a career.

After four years of The Army, Ellery attended Diablo Valley College, Fall ’05 working towards an A.A. in General Education until he finds something that interests him.

“My passion lies in stand-up comedy and acting, both of which I actively pursue when I am not at school. The plan is for the degree to allow me to be able to get me a good job, keeping me fed and in clothing other than burlap sacks while I pursue acting roles and comedy gigs. Thus, hopefully I’ll be able to transfer to a school somewhere in southern California enabling me to do both,” says Ellery.

Recently, Ellery was a part of Life Sentence; a mainly Spoken Word and Poetry Show featuring open mic, SLAM and your occasional comedian now and again, on Tuesday, July 10, ’07. Life Sentence is co-produced by UBO Magazine’s Aaris A. Schroeder, Founder/Editor-In-Chief who works on marketing the show and public relations and 3rd Eye Collective’s –Go who books and arranges the show and Sean who does video footage for the show to produce a live e-cast.

East Bay Area native Ellery brought the house down with his off the cuff comedy more or less teasing himself to allow the crowd to get to know him as a nerd he is. Jokes about himself looking like Reading Rainbow host, Levar Burton and how his college professor will call him random predominately African-American names left the crowd laughing and pleased with what they had to hear.

Needing to leave early to get back to East Bay, Ellery left with a young lady but not before bidding his farewells to the pumped up crowd who was just as new to Life Sentence as Ellery except for a few return faces from the first show the week before. UBO Magazine & 3rd Eye Collective Present: Life Sentence with Comedian Ellery and Local Open-Mic Artists

If you haven't been out to Butch N Nellies on i and 19th for a panini or gelato, please do! UBO Magazine and 3rd Eye Collective, [-Go of AI Live] have put together a Spoken Word/Poetry/Slam/Open-Mic show at this wonderful coffee house that has the sweet smells of coffee and pasties and the lovely designs of local artists that are featured every week on the walls of the carefully decorated and irresistable cafe.

Life Sentence featured some sweet local poets, some of which were quite nervous when getting to the stage but performed with such professionalism and art-ism that no one could tell the difference.

Currently in test phases, -Go attempted to have the audience participate in what UBO and 3rd Eye call 'Life Sentence.' While Sean, the Camera guy and his trusty assistant were tallying up the SLAM contestant scores to see who was to win $30, -Go would point to someone who would ramble off a word, phrase, short two-liner, or something important they wanted to say. It was interesting to see how people interpreted the game -- because it is all wide open!

Next week, come see local Sacramento, CA native Supa Nova in his natural habitat! Multi-talented spoke word/SLAM artist as well as trumpet player.

Life Sentence will be broadcasted live on the Internet at STICKAM.COM. There will more information as the show details progress throughout the week. Starting next week, you will be able to view our live e-cast on our MySpace page.
